Islam And Sufism By Habib Ali Al Jifri ...

Islam is divided into 3 parts

Islam
Iman
Ihsan

This is how Sufism is rooted in the Sharia ...
Here is an excerpt of the authentic Hadith of Jibreel ...

My father, Umar ibn al-Khattab told me:

One day we were sitting in the company of Allah’s Apostle (PBUH) ...
When there appeared before us a man dressed in pure white clothes ...
His hair extraordinarily black ...
There were no signs of travel on him ...
None amongst us recognized him ...

At last he sat with the Apostle (PBUH) ...

He knelt before him, placed his palms on his thighs and said:

Muhammad, inform me about al-Islam ...

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:

Al-Islam implies that you testify that
There is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah
And you establish prayer ...
Pay Zakat
Observe the fast of Ramadan
And perform pilgrimage to the (House) if you are solvent enough
(to bear the expense of) the journey ...

He (The Inquirer) said: You have told the truth ...

He (Umar ibn al-Khattab) said:

It amazed us that he would put the question ...
And then he would himself verify the truth ...

He (The Inquirer) said:

Inform me about Imaan (faith) ...

He (The Holy Prophet) replied:

That you affirm your faith
In Allah
In His angels
In His Books
In His Apostles
In the Day of Judgment
And you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil ...

He (The Inquirer) said:

You have told the truth ...

He (The Inquirer) again said:

Inform me about al-Ihsan (Performance Of Good Deeds) ...

He (The Holy Prophet) said:

That you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him ...
For though you don’t see Him
He, verily, sees you ...

He (The Narrator, Umar ibn al-Khattab) said:

Then he (The Inquirer) went on his way ...
But I stayed with him (The Holy Prophet) for a long while ...

He then, said to me:

Umar, do you know who this inquirer was ???

I replied:

Allah and His Apostle knows best ...

He (The Holy Prophet) remarked:

He was Gabriel (The Angel) ...
He came to you in order to instruct you in matters of religion - (Sahih Muslim)

So, in Islam, every part of the deen has a science ...

Fiqh is the science of Islam, which governs the limbs ...

This is our
Ritual prayer
The ritual ablution
How to fast
Etc…

Aqeeda (Creed) is the science of imaan (Faith)
Which teaches us proper belief
And how we have to belief in Angels and the Messengers (PBUT) etc ...

Iman corresponds to the heart and mind ...

Finally there is Ihsan
Which is focused on the heart ... The consciousness and inward behavior ...
It’s corresponding science is Tasawwuf or Sufism ...

Islam is the outward which is made erect by Imaan the inward ...

And it is perfected by Ihsan a palpable consciousness of God comparable to “Seeing” ...

Truly it is not their eyes that are blind ... But their hearts which are in their breasts - (Quran 22:46)

More On The Heart:

Presence of heart is what substantiates outward worship ...

Verily, God does not look to your bodies ...

Nor to your forms ...
But He looks to your hearts - [Muslim]

If it is sound, the entire body is sound ...

And if it is corrupt the whole body is corrupt - [Bukhari]

So this is all what Tasawwuf is about ...

It is about purifying the heart from what makes hearts go blind ...
Sufism can be called the science of Ihsan ...
It is just as much of a science of Shari'aa as is Fiqh and Aqeeda ...
So people that reject it are rejecting a whole third of Islam ...

On Tasawwuf:

Its beginning is knowledge ... Its middle is action ... And its end is bestowed ...
[Sidi Ahmad ibn `Ajiba al-Maliki]

To avoid any misinterpretation of what is implied by the words Sufi and “Sufism” in Arabic:

Tasawwuf, the fact of wearing a garment made of wool [Suf] [As an emblem of purity]
Was adopted to designate the quest for spiritual illumination ...

While Sufi was applied to characterize the person
Who had attained an obvious degree of proximity to God ...

This indicates that Sufism has always been embedded in the texture of the Islamic creed
Representing an ideal mode of worship derived from the Quranic Revelation
And from the customs and sayings (Sunna and Hadith) of the Prophet Muhammad
And then transmitted without interruption throughout the centuries

What about the different Sufi orders ???

They basically represent different methods ...

Without there being any possibility of a fundamental difference of doctrine ...
For the doctrine of Unity is unique - (At-Tawhidu Wahid)

Was this around at the time of the Prophet (May Allah Bless Him And Give Him Peace) ???

For those who say:

Where did the name Tasawwuf come from ???
It was not received from the Prophet (PBUH)

The Prophet (PBUH) never said Sufiya ???

Did the Prophet (PBUH) mention Muhaddithun (Peopleof Hadith) ???
Did the Prophet (PBUH) talk of Huffadh (Memorizers of Quran) ???
Did the Prophet (PBUH) talk about the Usuliyun (People of the principle of religion) ???
Did the Prophet (PBUH) talk of the Shaykh of Islam ???
Did the Prophet (PBUH) talk of the Mufti ???

The Prophet (PBUH) did not use these words ...
But this community has constructed technical terms ...

The Repentance Prayer By Habib Ali ...

The following is Sheikh Abdul Karim’s translation of the Repentance Prayer
Taught by Sheikh Habib Ali Al-Jifri in the “Journey to Allah” course ...

The Repentance Prayer:

Oh my God
Your runaway slave has returned to Your door ...
Your disobedient servant has returned in reconciliation ...
Your sinning slave has come seeking Your Pardon ...
So pardon me by virtue of Your munificence ...
And accept me through Your grace ...
And give me Your Gaze (or look to me) through Your Mercy ...

Oh Allah
Forgive me for what has proceeded of my sins
And protect me (from sinning)
And other than that in what remains of my apportioned term of my lifespan ...
For indeed ALL good is in Your Hand ...
And You are Merciful and Extremely Compassionate to us ...

Oh You who manifests the great affairs ...
And You Who are the furthest extent of the aspiration of those who are worried ...
Oh You Who if You will something, all You do is say "Be" and it is ...
Our sins have surrounded us ...
And You are the One Who we have stored up for them (like storing up for a time of hardship) ... Oh You Who were saved as a Treasure for every difficulty ...
I was saving You for this moment
So forgive me ...
Indeed You are the One who constantly accepts the repentance of His servants
(Gives tawfiq to repent again and again) ...

Oh You Who is not busy by hearing anything from hearing anything else ...
And You Who many requests do not cause Him to fall into error ...
And You Who is not annoyed by the constant asking of those who constantly beseech You ... Make me taste the coolness of Your pardon ...
And the sweetness of Your forgiveness, by Your Mercy ...
Oh Most Merciful of those who show mercy ...
Indeed, You are able to do all things Omnipotent ...

The repentance prayer stresses the resolve to never return to disobedience again ...
Which is one of the crucial steps of repentance ...

The steps of repentance are:

1. Leaving the sin
2. Strongly regretting the sin
3. Resolving never to return to the sin

Excerpt From The Book: Jesus Christ And His Blessed Mother ... By Habib Ali Jafri & Dr Gibril Haddad

After the manifestation of absolute spirituality appears
In this existence
In the face of absolute materiality ...

The latter will crack and cave in before the former
Because materiality comes second to the spirit ...

Materiality was created only as a servant to the spirit
Were it not for the foolishness of the people
And their covetousness that caused them to make themselves servants of materialism ...

When the Manifestation of the tyranny of materialism looks
At the Manifestation of the supremacy of the spirit
It shall melt and be powerless to resist ...

At that time the Divine victory will appear in plain sight
At the hand of our liege-lord Jesus [Upon Him Be Peace] ...

Qur'aan 33 (10 -18) ...

Muhammad is not the father of any of your men ...
But he is the Messenger of Allah ...
And the Seal of the Prophets ...
And Allah has full knowledge of all things ....

O you who believe ...
Celebrate the praises of Allah often ...
And glorify Him morning and evening ...
It is He who sends blessings upon you ...
As do His angels ...
That He may bring you out from the depths of darkness ...
Into the light ...
And He is full of mercy to the believers ...

Their salutation the day they meet Him will be “Peace” ...
And He has prepared for them a great reward ...

O Prophet ...
Truly we have sent you as a witness ...
A bearer of glad tidings ...
And a warner ...
And as one who invites to Allah by His leave ...
And as an illuminating lamp ...

And give glad tidings to the believers ...
That they shall have from Allah, a great bounty ...
And do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites ...
Nor heed their annoyances ...
But put your trust in Allah ...
And Sufficient is Allah as a disposer of affairs ...

O my master, O Messenger of Allah, take my hand ...
I have none besides you ...
Nor will I pause to rely on anyone but you ...
For you are the light of guidance in everything that exists
And you are the secret of munificence and the best reliance ...
And you are in truth the helper of all creation ...
And you are the guide of mortals to Allah ...
Owner of help ...

O you who stand on the Station of Praise ...
Singled out by the One Who is Single ...
Who is not begotten and does not beget ...

O you from whose fingers rivers burst forth
So that he quenched the thirst of the numerous army ...

Verily if I am faced with harm and fearful injustice I say:
O Master of masters ...
O my support ...
Be my intercessor with the Merciful regarding my mistakes ...
And grace me with what eludes my heart ...
And look upon me always ...
And ever with kind eyes ...
And cover with your favor my shortcomings all my life ...
Kindly bestow on me encompassing forgiveness for from you
O my master
I was never separated ...
I have sought as my means the elect one ...
The noblest of any that ascended the heavens ...
The secret of the Unique One ???

O Lord of beauty ...
Exalted is Allah Who created him ...
For such as him in all creation I have never seen ???
The best of creatures ...
The apex of Messengers ...
The treasure of humankind and their guide to integrity ...

In him I have taken refuge ...
Perhaps Allah will forgive me ...
This is what I count on and firmly believe ...
Therefore his tireless praise shall never cease to be my task
And love of him sustains me in the presence of the Lord of the Throne ...
Upon him the purest of endless blessings without cease together
With greetings that cannot be stemmed nor counted ...
And upon his Family and Companions ...
A glorious folk all ...
The ocean of forgiveness ...
The people of generosity and aid ...

Rumi ... Ghazal 1393

All because of love ...
When it arrived ...
My temporal life ...
From then on ...
Changed to eternal ...

Harab bir ev gibidir Qur'an'dan boş bir gönül
Harabeye uğramaz gülistan arar bülbül

A heart without Qur'aan
Is a like ruined house ...

The nightingale doesn't call on ruins
So it looks for a rose garden ...

Rumi ...

Both light and shadow are the dance of Love ...
Love has no cause ...
It is the astrolabe of God's secrets ...
Lover and loving are inseparable and timeless ...

Although I may try to describe love
When I experience it
I am speechless ...

Although I may try to write about love
I am rendered helpless ...

My pen breaks
And the paper slips away
At the ineffable place

Where
Lover
Loving
And loved
Are one

Every moment is made glorious by the light of Love ...

Rumi ...

Improve yourself

Let die what is alive: That is your body

Revive what is dead: That is your heart

Hide what is present: That is the world down here

Let come what is absent: That is the world of the future life

Annihilate what exists: That is passion

Produce what does not exist: That is intention

It was narrated that in the days that Musa alayhis salaam wandered with Bani Israeel in the desert, an intense drought befell them ...

Together, they raised their hands towards the heavens praying for the blessed rain to come ...

Then, to the astonishment of Musa alayhis salaam and all those watching, the few scattered clouds that were in the sky vanished ... T
he heat poured down ...
And the drought intensified ...

It was revealed to Musa that there was a sinner amongst the tribe of Bani Israeel who had disobeyed Allah subhaanahu wa ta 'aala for more than forty years of his life ...

"Let him separate himself from the congregation"
Allah subhaanahu wa ta 'aala told Musa alayhis salaam ...
"Only then shall I shower you all with rain"

Musa alayhis salaam then called out to the throngs of humanity:

"There is a person amongst us who has disobeyed Allah for forty years ...
Let him separate himself from the congregation
And only then shall we be rescued from the drought"

That man waited, looking left and right, hoping that someone else would step forward, but no one did ...

Sweat poured forth from his brow and he knew that he was the one ...
The man knew that if he stayed amongst the congregation all would die of thirst ...
And that if he stepped forward he would be humiliated for all eternity ...

He raised his hands with a sincerity he had never known before ...

With humility he had never tasted ...
And as tears poured down on both cheeks he said:

O Allah, have mercy on me ...
O Allah, hide my sins ...
O Allah, forgive me ...

As Musa alayhis salaam and the people of Bani Israeel waited for the sinner to step forward, the clouds hugged the sky and the rain poured ...

Musa alayhi salaam asked Allah subhaanahu wa ta 'aala:

"O Allah, you blessed us with rain even though the sinner did not come forward"

And Allah subhaanahu wa ta 'aala replied:

"O Musa, it is for the repentance of that very person that I blessed all of Bani Israeel with water"

Musa alayhis salaam, wanting to know who this blessed man was, asked:

"Show him to me O Allah"

Allah subhaanahu wa ta 'aala replied:

"O Musa, I hid his sins for forty years ... Do you think that after his repentance I shall expose him" ???

Here is a little excerpt, from the story of Musailamah the liar ...
And the letter he wrote to the Prophet (SAW)

One day the south of the Arab Peninsula witnessed the emergence of two
Presumptuous and arrogant liars
Who claimed prophethood
And tried to drag people into the swamp of sin and disbelief ...

One of these impostors was called Al-Aswad Ibn Ka'b Al `Aansiy, from San'aa ...
The other was Musailamah the Liar from Al Yamaamah ...

Both impostors incited people against the believers in their tribes
Who responded to what Allah ordained and who believed in His Prophet ...

They also goaded them against the Prophet's messengers
Whom he sent to their lands ...
Moreover, they even went so far as to ignite suspicion against prophethood itself
And committed hideous mischief in the land
Causing corruption and disbelief ...

One day, the Prophet (PBUH) was surprised when a messenger arrived
With a message from Musailamah in which he said:

From Musailamah Allah's Prophet to Muhammad Allah's Prophet ...
Peace be upon you ...
We are your partner in prophethood ...
Consequently, we have half of the earth ...
And the Quraish has the other half ...
But the Quraish want unjustly to have it all ...

The Prophet (PBUH) summoned one of his scribes
And dictated this answer to Musailamah:

In the name of Allah
The Most Beneficient
The Most Merciful
From Muhammad the Prophet of Allah to Musailamah the Liar ...
Peace be upon those who followed the right path ...
Verily, the earth is Allah's ...
He gives it as a heritage to whom He will of His slaves ...
And the blessed end is for the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah ...

Al-Hajjah Farizah Rabbat Umm Ibrahim Al-Yaqoubi Al-Hasani ...

This is a copy of the letter that Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi Al-Hasani wrote
In tribute of his beloved wife, who passed away in May of 2006

A very beautiful and emotional letter ...

‘Grief and sorrow upon the loss of my heart’

My Dear brothers and sisters, relatives, friends, students and supporters throughout the world:
As-Salamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatuh ...
Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we must surely return ...

With grief and sorrow
I share with you the tragic loss of my beloved wife
My companion
And the love of my heart
Al-Hajjah Farizah Aal Rabbat
Known as Umm Ibrahim, Rahimaha Allah
Who is also the mother of my three children (Aisha, Ibrahim and Ismael) ...

Allah chose her out of this world to enter al-Jannah on the very birthday of His Beloved Prophet (SAW) through the door of martyrs ...

I do not object to His Will:
We belong to Him and our return is to Him ...
Whatever He takes is undoubtedly His ...
And whatever He gives is undoubtedly His ...

She left this world on Monday 12th of Rabi’ Al-Awwal, 1427 (April 10th 2006)

Around 5:00 pm in a car accident while she was driving from our home outside Damascus
Toward the city to visit her family and attend a mawlid ...

At the same time, I was leading a mawlid feast in the city ...

She died at 37 years of age
And was approximately five months pregnant with a baby boy who also died ...

Just a few hours before the accident we had agreed to name him Shareef ...

With her in the car
She had our three children
Aisha, Ibrahim and Ismael
Who are 8, 6, and 5 years old respectively and her maid Nour ...
By the Bounty of the Most Generous
They survived the accident but were all injured at various levels ...
They are still in hospital being treated ...

Please continue to make du’aa for them ...

On Sunday night (the night of 12th of Rabi’ Al-Awwal)
We had a blessed mawlid gathering in our home ...

Monday, the day she died
We had brunch together with the kids
And I told her I wanted to take her and the kids in August
To al-Madina al-Munawwara
Where she can deliver her baby ...

She was extremely happy and took my word
That I will name the boy Shareef ...
I left home at 1:30 pm on Monday for a dars and a mawlid in the city ...
At 5:15 pm I received the news of the accident and immediately headed to the hospital
Only to find out that she had given her last breaths ...

Later on
The rescuers told us that when they reached her
She was still alive moving her lips
(presumably with shahada, and dhikr) but could not make it to the hospital ...

As an English teacher
Umm Ibrahim worked in a neighboring school teaching the first three grades ...
She has had this job for the past three years and always considered it an important mission ...
It fulfilled her ambitions ...
She liked to improve herself through reading and training
Through which she acquired many skills in recent years
Including NLP and Homeopathy ...
She loved social activities and had a strong personality ...
She was an excellent housewife and a great cook ...

But most of all
What distinguished Umm Ibrahim
And the reason for which I had chosen her as a wife
Was her righteousness
Persistence in worship
And her sincerity to the deen

For instance
In the last few months of her life
She used to pray 100 rak’as of salah everyday ...
She recited Surat al-Baqara everyday ...
Oftentimes with Surat al-An’am ...
Qiyamullayl decorated her nights ...
And was something she would hardly miss ...

She always had new ideas to promote da’wah

And attract people to the true way of Islam ...
She devoted her life to her family and to students of sacred knowledge ...
After prayer and recitation of al-Qur’an
Nothing was dearer to her than serving the students
Cooking for them
And taking care of their needs ...

The night before she died
She prepared food for my guests
As we were having a feast in our home on the occasion of 12th of Rabi’ Al-Awwal
The anniversary of the Birth of the Beloved of Allah ...

Six days earlier, on Tuesday 6th Rabi’ Al-Awwal
She cooked for 150 guests
Insisting she did not want to order the food ...

She used to prepare the most delicious food
At our weekly dhikr session for 50 people ...

One week before she died
She said, when I was trying to convince her to order food:

I find cooking for the students light and easy
And I don’t want to be deprived from its rewards
I know what they like
And the food brought from the market is fatty for them

Such was her amazing dedication ...

Moreover
She liked jabrul Khawatir ...
So at Eid times
She used to prepare bags full of sweets
And gifts to hand over to kids in poor neighborhoods ...
She used to make Eid parties for the foreign students
And organise special programs for their children ...

Some 3000 people attended her funeral
Which took place on Tuesday after Zuhr prayer at Jami’ al-Badr in Damascus ...
Three years ago
Upon a visit to Bab al-Saghir cemetery
Where my ancestors are buried
She said to me:

When I die, bury me in the graves of your family ...  I want to be with Ahlul Bait ...

By the Grace of Allah
She was buried bearing a grandson of the Beloved Messenger of Allah ...
In the grave of my mother, Al-Sayyida Ameenah Mansoor al-Jaza’irly al-Hasani
Who passed away also in the month of April in 1996
Just a few months before myself and Umm Ibrahim got married ...

Umm Ibrahim had met my mother one week before my mother died ...
Her grave is only a few meters away
From the daughter of Imam al-Husain Sayyidah Fatima al-Sughra

I am happy with her now
And I was happy with her before she died
As she was happy with me ...

In the past few weeks before she died
She told her mother and a few friends over the phone
Even the morning of her death
How happy she was in her marriage ...

According to a Prophetic statement when a woman dies
While her husband is happy with her

She will enter al-Jannah ...

I have seen several signs
That she will be in al-Jannah

Obviously
The servants of the Ahlul Bayt will be in al-Jannah
Let alone the wives or mothers of Ahlul Bayt

Many outstanding personalities and scholars spoke
During the three-day sessions of condolences held on her behalf

They included:
Sayyif al-Fatih al-Kittani

Shaykh Dr. Sa’id Ramadan al-Bouti
Shaykh Krayyim Rajih
Shaykh Dr. Abdullatif Farfoor
Shaykh Abdullah Rabih
ShaykhAbdul Aziz al-Khateeb
ShaykhAbul Hasan al-Kurdi
Shaykh Ahmad Ramadan
ShaykhNa’im al-'Araqsoosi
Shaykh Sariyah al-Rifa’i
And many others ...

Last but not least
I would like to offer my deepest thanks and gratitude to all the scholars
The friends
The students
Male and female
In Syria and throughout the world
Who supported me and my children and Umm Ibrahim’s family
In this difficult time in every form ...

Nothing is enough to thank the many thousands of brothers and sisters in Damascus
And around the globe who stood with us during this trial ...

I beg you to continue your du’aa for the full recovery of the children ...
Make du`aa especially that Allah help the three children cope with the loss of their mother ...
And that the shock, when they learn the news, may easily be absorbed ...

Make du’aa for her parents, as the tragic loss is indeed difficult for them ...
And please do continue to make special du`aa for Umm Ibrahim
That Allah grant her Mercy
And forgiveness
And reward her with Jannatul Firdaws ...

I end with the following dreams ...

A Syrian sister saw Umm Ibrahim coming into a room, filled with light ...

Umm Ibrahim said to her:

Don’t worry about me ... I am in the best state ...

A brother by the name Zahir saw her calling Imam Abul Hasan al Shadhiliy
Which shows the blessings in the attachment to our great shadhili silsila
As she was part of it
Took tariqa over a year ago

Another sister saw on the same morning she died
That a righteous woman passed away in Damascus, during the day ...
She learned of the death of Umm Ibrahim

Yes, indeed Umm Ibrahim did not survive the accident ...
But in fact she did survive in my heart
And I am sure she will survive in the hearts of those who love her ...

May Allah grant her the highest ranks in al-Jannah

And the company of my Grandfather
Our Master
The best of creation
The Beloved Messenger of Allah (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam)

May Allah give her her book in her right hand
And let her enter Jannah without reckoning ...

May He make her grave a garden from the Gardens of Paradise
MayAllah reward all brothers and sisters
And shaykhs and ‘Ulama
And everyone who made Du’a for her
And for me and for the children in the best way ...

May Allah protect them and their families
Their parents and their children
And allow us all to meet in Jannatul Firdaws
In the company of the Elect
And the Beloved of Allah
Rasulullah (Salla Allahu ‘alayhi wasallam)

Allahumma Ameen

The unworthy servant of the people of Allah,
Muhammad

Thank you all for the beautiful birthday wishes ...

I have truly been blessed
To have had the good fortune of knowing many beautiful souls throughout my life ...

I ask that you all remember me in your prayers
And continue to play a part in my life in any which way that you do ...

All praise and thanks is for God ...
So I thank Him for giving me such amazing people in my life ...

My parents
My sister
My friends
And every single person that I've ever come accross ...
Even if we've never exchanged words ...

You were all there at those moments for a reason ...

You were all a part of my rizk ...

May Allah elevate you all ...
May you all be light ...
Be tolerant ...

And in one of the most beautiful duas I've ever heard
I was moved to tears when I heard this:

If you see me on the bridge, please take my hand and take me to Jannah ...
And if i see you, I will take your hand inshallah - (Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi)

Much Love,

Peace ...
Blessings ...
