Inayat Khan ...

Life is what it is ...
You cannot change it ...
But you can always change yourself ...

In the time of the Prophet
Tasawwuf was a reality without a name ...

Today Tasawwuf is a name
But few know its reality ...

Ibn Arabi ...

Were it not for the excess of your talking ...
And the turmoil in your hearts ...

You would see what I see ...
And hear what I hear ...

Rumi ...

There is no salvation for the soul
But to fall in Love

It has to creep and crawl
Among the Lovers first

Only Lovers can escape
From these two worlds

This was written in
creation

Only from the heart
Can you reach the sky

The rose of Glory
Can only be raised in the Heart

Look upon this ship of God's creatures ...
And see how it is sunk in Love ...

Abu Dawood ...

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

Whoever says:

Hasbiyallahu Laa ilaaha illaa hua,
'alayhi tawakkaltu wa hua rabb-ul-'arsh-el-'azeem

Translation:

Allah is sufficient for me ...
None has the right to be worshipped except Him ...
Upon Him I rely ...
And He is Lord of the exalted throne ...

[Whoever says it] seven times in the morning and in the evening, Allah will take care of whatever worries him/her of the matters of the world and the hereafter ...

Shantideva ...

All the violence, fear and suffering that exists in this world
Comes from grasping at "SELF" ...

What use is this great monster to you ???

If you do not let go of the "SELF"...
There will never be an end to your suffering ...

Abu Said Abil Khair ...

Until you become an unbeliever in your own self ...
You cannot become a believer in God ...

LOOOOVE ...

Kwahish dil se nahi rohn se honi chahiye ...
Mohabbat zindagi se nahi khuda se honi chahiye ...

Translation:

Desires should not be from the heart but from the soul ...
Love should not be for the world but for Allah ...

What Does Love Mean ...

Love is a flame that burns away all that is not Allah ...
Love is a Beautiful and Divine Gift that Allah has blessed us all with ...

Love is what keeps the Universe in motion ...
It keeps the world turning ...
And it's what circulates in our blood ...

The essence of our Creation is Love ...

In the sense of Romantic relationships, Allah tells us to Love one another for His sake ...

We Love a human being because he or she is also another Creation of Allah ...
And the fact that they're in our lives means that they're a blessing from Allah ...
Your family, your friends, your loved ones, they are all gifts to you from the Divine ...
The Special One ...
The twin half or soul mate is a special blessing ...

The key to a successful marriage or union of souls
Is to understand the truth of "Love is a flame that burns away all that is not Allah" ...

Allah is the UNITER ...

The MATCHMAKER ...
The PILLAR OF STRENGTH and UNITY in the relationship ...

Whenever there is a problem between the couples, it should be understood that it is normal ...
But it should also be meditated that Allah is the solution to all problems ...

Love is friendship on fire, as many people say ...
Friends are granted to you from Allah ...

And so in turn, there will only be Beauty and Success for those who are mindful of Allah
And his blessed gift of love - (Rumi)

If one loves someone because it gives pleasure ...

One should not be regarded as loving that person at all ...

The love is, in reality, though this is not perceived, directed towards the pleasure ...

The source of the pleasure is the secondary object of attention ...
And it is perceived only because the perception of the pleasure is not well enough developed for the real feeling to be identified and described  - (Imam al-Ghazali )

Many mistakes may occur in love ...

The first of them is that people imagine that the object of love is an existent thing ...
In fact, love's object remains forever nonexistent ...
But most lovers are not aware of this ...
Unless they should be knowers of the realities - (Ibn 'Arabi)

True love seeks sacrifice and I’ve given it all
This, this is true love in it’s purest form
I turn my face towards You now
The Lord of my world and the Heavens above
I am Yours and Yours, alone
My prayer, my sacrifice are only for You
My life and death are Yours to take
A promise I make
To lay my life for You
An oath that I worship
No one but You

(Inspired by dua of The Holy Prophet (PBUH) to be read at Qurbani time)

Quotes from THE PROPHET ... Khalil Gibran

You delight in laying down laws
Yet you delight more in breaking them ...
Like children playing by the ocean who build sand towers

With constancy and then destroy them with laughter ...

It is when your spirit wandering upon wind
That you, alone and unguarded

Commit a wrong
Unto others and therefore unto yourself ...

And when one of you falls down

He falls for those behind him ...
A caution against the stumbling stone ...
Ay, and he falls for those ahead of him

Who, though faster and surer of foot
Yet removed not the stumbling stone ...

Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself ...
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed ...
For love is sufficient unto love ...

And think not you can direct the course of love ...

For love, if it finds you worthy
Directs your course ...

It is well to give when asked ...

But it is better to give unasked ...

For in truth it is life that gives unto life ...

While you, who deem yourself a giver ...
Are but a witness ...

Verily the lust for comfort, murders the passion of the soul ...

And then walks grinning in the funeral ...

You soul is oftentimes a battlefield

Upon which your reason and your judgement wage war
Against your passion and your appetite ...

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding ...

And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter

And sharing of pleasures ...
For in the dew of little things ...
The heart finds its morning ...
And is refreshed ...

You talk when you cease to be at peace with your thoughts ...
And when you can no longer dwell in the solitude of your heart ...

You live in your lips
And sound is a diversion and a pastime ...
And in much of your talking, thinking is half murdered ...
For thought is a bird of space ...

That in a cage of words may indeed unfold its wings
But cannot fly ...

Speak To Us Of Clothes ... Kahlil Gibran (The Prophet)

Your clothes conceal much of your beauty ...
Yet they hide not the unbeautiful ...

Forget not that modesty is for a shield ...
Against the eye of the unclean ...

Pablo Neruda ... 100 Love Sonnets ...

Do not go for one minute, beloved ...

Because in that minute you
Will have gone so far ...

That I will cross all the earth asking
If you will return ...

Or if you will leave me dying ...

Our Mission ... Moinudeen Hassan Chishti ...

Love all and hate none
Mere talk of peace will avail you naught
Mere talk of God and religion will not take you far
Bring out all of the latent powers of your being
And reveal the full magnificence of your immortal self
Be surcharged with peace and joy
And scatter them wherever you are and wherever you go
Be a blazing fire of truth
Be a beauteous blossom of love and a soothing balm of peace
With your spiritual light dispel the darkness of ignorance
Dissolve the clouds of discord and war
Spread the message of goodwill
Peace and harmony among the people
Never seek any help
Charity or favours from anybody except God
Never go to the courts of Kings
But never refuse to bless and help the needy and the poor
The widow and the orphan when they come to your door
This is your mission, to serve the people ...

The Conference of the Birds ... Attar

[Some quotes from one of my favourite books]
The Conference of the Birds (Mantiq al-tair)
By Farid ad-Din Attar

The whole world is a marketplace for Love,
For naught that is, from Love remains remote ...
The Eternal Wisdom made all things in Love ...
On Love they all depend, to Love all turn ...
The earth ...
The heavens ...
The sun ...
The moon ...
The stars
The center of their orbit find in Love ...
By Love are all bewildered, stupefied,Intoxicated by the Wine of Love ...

In the dead of night, a Sufi began to weep ...

He said:
This world is like a closed coffin, in which We are shut ...
And in which, through our ignorance,We spend our lives in folly and desolation ...
When Death comes to open the lid of the coffin ...
Each one who has wings will fly off to Eternity ...
But those without will remain locked in the coffin ...

So, my friends ... Before the lid of this coffin is taken off ...
Do all you can to become a bird of the Way to God ...
Do all you can to develop your wings and your feathers ...

Let us drown ourselves in the ocean of nonexistence ...
And come out cloaked with the garment of divine existence ...

God said to Moses once:
Go out and find The secret truth that haunts the devil's mind ...

When Moses met the devil that same day, he asked for his advice and heard him say:

Remember this, repeat it constantly ...
Don't speak of "me", or you will be like me ...
If life still holds you by a single hair
The end of your toil will be dispair
No matter how you prosper, there will rise
Before your face a hundred smirking "I"s ...

Rumi ...

Attar roamed the seven cities of love ...
We are still just in one alley ...

Five Things Cause Five Others ...

Abu Hurayrah (ra) said:
If anyone has five things then he will not be deprived of five others ...

1. He who is enabled to show gratitude will never be deprived of increase of blessings ...
"If you give thanks, certainly I will give you more" (14:7)

2. He who is guided to persevere will not be deprived of reward ...
"Truly the persevering will be paid their reward in full without reckoning" (39:10)

3. One who is inspired to repent will not be deprived of its acceptance ...
"And He is (Allah) Who accepts repentance from His servants" (42:25)

4. One who is enabled to seek forgiveness will not be deprived of receiving pardon ...
"Seek forgiveness of your Lord ... Surely He is Ever-Forgiving" (71:10)

5. He who is spurred to make supplication is not deprived of an answer ...
"Call upon Me, and I shall answer you" (40:60)

Someone else added a sixth proposition ...

That one who is encouraged to spend will not be deprived of reward thereof ...
"And whatsoever you expend (for good) He shall replace it" (34:39)

Solitude ... Ahmed Hussain [10/02/2005]

What is it about silence
That causes the soul to sing ???
Resonance and wide open spaces
That echo the voices within …

Metallic reverb, sometimes copper and tin
Other times warm woody bass and hollows
One sound following the other
Each note a brother, lyrics and rhythms akin ...

They’re all quiet, and stillness surrounds
Flying melodies now buried in ground
Silence is golden, it has to be The way ...
Much more than melodies ...

Forever to stay…

(Ahmed Hussain 1974-2006 ... R.I.P my brother ... You're greatly missed)

May He steal from you ...
All that steals you from Him ...

December ... Ahmed Hussain

I am blessed and cursed by memories
Of you that make it impossible to despise ...

You, even though tears fill my eyes
Every time I remember …

December …

It's strange that in the winter months
Slick roads, snow storms and freezing cold
Only brought us closer to together ...

I will never forget the warmth of your embrace ...

Now that Spring is here, the beauty of your face I see in every blossom ...
Your voice in every buzzing bee-zanbur ...

But you’re not here to share the honey
Okakura’s Tea is meant to be bitter isn’t it ???

The wine of heaven awaits me after death ...

Although I’m drinking tea right now, I am smelling its bouquet ...
And with every sip I’m realizing that either drink
Takes the form of the vessel in which it resides ...

Description of the God Conscious ... From Nahj al-Balagha

It is related that a devout worshipper by the name of Humam came to Imam ‘Ali, may God ennoble his countenance, and asked him to describe the God conscious people so vividly that he could almost see them. Imam ‘Ali responded: “Their speech is truthful; their clothing is moderate; and they walk with utmost humility. They lower their gaze from everything God has forbidden. They allow their ears to listen only to that which is beneficial. Their souls accept exposure to trials and tribulations [in adherence to the truth] as easily as others accept luxurious living. Were it not for their appointed term, their spirits would not have remained in their bodies the span of a twinkling of the eye due to their intense longing for their Lord. Because the Creator is magnified in their souls, everything else is viewed as insignificant in their sight. Their hearts are sober; people are safe from any wickedness from them; their bodies are slim [they don’t overindulge their appetites]; their basic needs are few; and their souls are chaste. They patiently endure the few days they spend in this world knowing that they will be followed by a long, peaceful rest—this is the profitable life-transaction which their Lord has allowed them to enter into. The world desired them; however, they had no desire for it. It imprisoned them, but they ransomed their souls from it [with their restraint and righteous deeds].

At night, their feet are arranged in ranks as they dutifully recite the Qur’an in slow measured tones. If they come upon a verse that stimulates [in them] longing [for the delightful things which God has promised] they ponder it, craving to attain them. Their souls soar due to the intensity of their longing for those delights. If they come upon a verse that frightens them [with the threat of Allah’s dreadful punishment] they hear it reverberating in the depths of their hearts. They imagine that they hear the dreadful sounds of the Hellfire in the innermost recesses of their ears. You find them kneeling down [Before their Lord], begging to be liberated from the Hellfire. As for their days, they are forbearing, clement scholars. They are righteous and pious. Fear [Of Allah] piercestheir hearts like arrows. One who gazes upon them thinks that they are sick. However, they are far from being sick.

They are not satisfied with a minimal amount of righteous deeds

Nor do they consider excessive amounts of worship to be great ...
They see their faults, and they fear that their deeds will not be accepted ...

If someone praises one of them, he says:
"I know myself better than others [Know me], and my Lord is more knowledgeable of me than myself ...

O God! Do not take me to task for what they say ...
And make me better than what they think of me ...
And forgive me for those sins which they are unaware of ...

One of the signs [Of such a person] is that you observe strength in his religion ...

His gentleness is accompanied by sobriety ...
His faith is coupled with certainty ...
He longs for knowledge ...
He acts with forbearance ...
He lives moderately, even when blessed with wealth ...
He is humble in his worship ...
He endures poverty with dignified grace ...
He patiently endures trying circumstances ...
He seeks his sustenance from the lawful ...
He hastens to right guidance ...
He is agitated if he perceives greed in himself ...
He works righteousness all the while trembling [Fearing that his deeds won’t be accepted
His greatest concern is gratitude ...
In the morning preoccupied with the Remembrance of God ...
He goes to bed at night overwhelmed, apprehensive ...
He rises in the morning overjoyed ...
His apprehension arises from the awareness of his heedlessness ...
His joy is caused by the bounties and mercy [God has opened up for him during the coming day
If his soul presses him with something he despises, he does not concede [to it] and withholds from it what it desires ...
The comfort of his eye is that which is permanent [The reward of his righteous deeds
His abstinence from that which is temporal ...
He mixes clemency with knowledge, and speech with action ...
He expects death at any moment ...
His slips are few [Because of his cautiousness and deliberateness in speech and actions]
His heart is content ...
He is easy-going ...
He is constantly on guard against assaults upon his religion ...
His lusts are dead ...
His anger is suppressed ...
People anticipate goodness from him ...
They are safe from any wickedness from him ...
If he is in the company of the heedless, he is recorded as being mindful [Of his Lord]
He overlooks those who oppress him ...

He gives to those who deny him ...
He joins relations with those who cut him off ...
He is far removed from any indecency ...
His speech is gentle ...
You find nothing bad in him ...
He is always a source of good ...
During calamities, he is composed ...
In dire straights, he is patient ...
In times of ease, he is thankful ...
He does not oppress those he dislikes nor does he sin for the sake of those he loves ...
He admits the truth before his witnessing is sought ...
He preserves all he is entrusted with ...
He does not hurl abusive names at people ...
He never harms his neighbor nor does he find joy in afflictions that befall his enemy.
If he is transgressed against, he perseveres until God takes revenge for him ...
He relies on himself while he himself is a source of relief for others [They can rely on him] He tires himself for the sake of his salvation, not burdening others in any way ...
His distance from those he avoids is a form of abstinence ...
While his drawing near to people is from his gentleness and mercy ...
Hence, his distance from people does not arise from arrogance and haughtiness ...
Nor is his closeness to them motivated by cunning and treachery ...

Hearing this, Humam dropped dead ...

Imam ‘Ali, [May God Be Pleased With Him] said:
This is what I feared would happen to him ...
Thus is the effect of a penetrating word when it reaches a receptive heart ...

Mos Def ...

You're not gonna get through life
Without being worshipful or devoted to something ...

You're either devoted to your job
Or to your desires ...

So the best way to spend your life
Is to try to be devoted to prayer, to Allah ...

I am As My Servant Expects Me To Be ...

I am as My servant expects Me to be ...
I am with him when he makes mention of Me ...

If he makes mention of Me to himself
I make mention of him to Myself

And if he makes mention of Me in an assembly
I make mention of him in an assembly better than it ...

And if he draws near to Me a hand’s span
I draw near to him an arm’s length ...

And if he draws near to me an arm’s length
I draw near to him a fathom’s length ...

And if he comes to Me walking
I go to him running ...

(Hadith Qudsi, Al-Bukhari)
